Came across this great tutorial, by Gary Honis, while browsing through Make Magazine’s blog the other day on how to modify a webcam so that you can easily use it to take astronomy photos through your telescope. The project looks quite simple and will only require an additional $20-$30 in parts plus an old webcam. He uses a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 however I’m sure you can find a way to do this with just about any webcam. The tutorial site was down yesterday as a result of traffic overload however Gary appears to have put it back up. Link to Gary Honis’s astro webcam…..

Here is a picture (dimensions 2160px × 1389px) of the Lagoon Nebula which can be used as a great desktop wallpaper for the space geek. The Lagoon Nebula is a stellar nursery about 5,000 light years away towards the center of the Milky Way. The Nebula itself spans a distance of about 50 light years. Link to picture.

Smashing Magazine has a Killer collection of Space Themed Wallpaper links for your enjoyment. Some appear to be artist representation, while others are shots from the Hubble Heritage Project (which by the way has an great collection of wallpapers in itself). Also be sure to check out the Hubble site archives which contains a crap load of wallpaper sized images from Hubble taken over the years (one of my personal favorites).
